Congratulations to the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite 2015 boys team on taking home some hardware this weekend! The boys returned from Whitby, Ontario as champions of the International Silver Sticks Whitby AAA Finals.
Thirty teams from across North America are invited to the annual event and this year, the 2015 boys recorded a perfect record en route to winning the championship game over Thanksgiving weekend.
The Pens Elite squad opened play in Pool D on Friday with a 1-0 win over the Toronto Marlboros followed by a 4-2 victory over the Cleveland Barons later in the day. On Saturday, a doubleheader resulted in two more victories, 4-2 over Chicago Mission and 4-1 over York Simcoe Express.
A perfect record in pool play led to a matchup with the Boston Jr. Terriers in the quarterfinals. In a close game, the Pens Elite boys advanced with a 2-1 overtime win. The semifinal game wasn’t as close as the Pens Elite squad prevailed 6-2 over a previously unbeaten St. Louis Blues team.
In the championship game, the Pens Elite opponent was the Mid Fairfield Jr. Rangers, a team that had an undefeated record and had only allowed 3 goals in 6 games. Despite this tough matchup, the 2015 Pens Elite squad scored 2 first period goals and held on for a 2-1 victory to be crowned champions.
Congrats to the members of the 2015 Pens Elite team on an outstanding performance north of the border!
