Tournaments

A part of the the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite vision is to expose its players to the best competition while also allowing them to experience different venues and settings.  This is done annually as each team has the ability to travel throughout the country and participate in various Tier 1 hockey tournaments.  Traveling to participate in weekend tournaments is a part of the process, but Pittsburgh has been fortunate enough to host a few tournaments in the area.

A few of the tournaments that have been hosted in Pittsburgh happen to be some of the most exciting tournaments in the country.

  • The Pittsburgh Girls Thanksgiving Classic is one of the largest tournaments in the country.  In 2013, there was an astounding 6 girls teams, and over 1,200 players competed over the weekend.  Another remarkable component of this tournament is that 45 of the 66 teams are from out of town including teams from Edmonton, Toronto, Ottawa, Owen Sound, Sarnia, and United States teams from New Jersey, Michigan, New York and Wisconsin.
  • One of newest and most exciting tournaments held in Pittsburgh has been the NHL Youth Cup.  This tournament features Tier 1 teams that are affiliated with NHL teams.  The games were played in both Pittsburgh and Philadelphia since 2013 giving both NHL organizations (Penguins and Flyers) the honor of co-hosting the first 3 annual NHL Youth Cups. This upcoming season the Youth Cup will be held in Philadelphia and Long Island.
  • This upcoming season will see the Mid Winter Classic continue as a great draw to the Pittsburgh area. Over 40 teams from around North America to descend upon Pittsburgh for great competition, fun times, and bragging rights.

Hockey and travel seemingly coincide with one another but this allows members of the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite teams to continue to the play the great game of hockey against the best players, best teams and best venues in the country.
