The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite 14U Girls team recently returned home as champions of yet another tournament. This time, it was the Detroit Elite Girls Invitational that the girls swept the competition on their way to a perfect record and another banner.

Playing 4 group stage games in 2 days is no easy task but the 14U girls made quick work of their opponents on the opening day of the tournament as they posted back-to-back shutouts, defeating Team Colorado 10-0 and the Bluewater Hawks 3-0. The winning trend continued the next day as the Pens Elite girls beat the Dallas Stars Elite 9-1 and recorded yet another shutout in defeating the Waterloo Ravens 2-0.

At the conclusion of the group stage, the 14U Pens Elite girls found themselves with an undefeated record and a +23 goal differential but found themselves looking up in the standings to another undefeated team, the hometown Little Caesars 14U girls based on tie-breakers.

After another shutout victory of the Waterloo Ravens in the semi-finals in which Izee Powell’s first period tally stood as the game’s only goal, the 14U Pens Elite girls and Little Caesars met in the championship game with both their undefeated records and a banner on the line.

Through 2 periods of the championship game, Little Caesars led 3-2. With her Pens Elite teammates in need of a third period spark, Katherine Khramtsov provided one by tying the game with just over half of the period remaining. With the clock winding down in regulation of a 3-3 tie and the game seemingly heading for a thrilling overtime finish, a shot from the point by Laney Potter found its way through traffic and into the back of the net to win not only the game but the whole tournament. Less than 1 second remained on the clock in what was a thrilling win to cap off a victorious weekend for the 14U Girls.

The 14U Pittsburgh Penguins Elite Girls are currently ranked 4th in the country with a 37-14-3 record and the banner at the Detroit Elite Girls Invitational is their fourth of the season. Congrats on the victory and good luck with the remainder of the season!
