The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite Under-18 team met Culver Military Academy today in the USA Hockey National Championship game at San Jose. Chad Veltri saved 22 of 22 shots for the shutout. Connor Quinn had the GWG which came in the first period. Jordan Timmons contributed a goal, as well as two assists. Eric Cooley had the same stat line, with a great goal in the third as well as two apples on the night. Logan Stork continued his scoring production in the tournament by recording an assist.
Penguins Elite, which plays out of the UPMC Lemieux Sports Center in Cranberry, defeated teams from Shattuck St. Mary’s, San Jose, Cape Cod and North Jersey in order to reach the national finals.
Will Casey scored two goals, including the game-winner, and Billy Harris tallied the other as Pens Elite upended powerhouse Shattuck St. Mary’s in the round-robin portion of the tournament. Chad Veltri made 22 saves.
Jordan Timmons scored a hat trick and Casey, Connor Quinn, Nick Long and Austin Tonkovich all added goals in a 7-3 romp over Cape Cod in the national quarterfinals. Velrti made 25 saves.
Logan Stork scored in overtime as Pens Elite beat North Jersey, 2-1, in the semifinals. Luke Edgerton had the other goal and Veltri stopped 27 of 28 shots.
