5 Pens Elite Alumni Ranked in NHL Central Scouting Mid-Season Rankings

Each season, NHL Central Scouting provides evaluation and scouting of draft-eligible players for NHL clubs. Their mid-season rankings feature the top 224 skaters and 32 goaltenders in North America as well as separate rankings for international players. This year, five players who previously suited up for the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite organization made the rankings. 

 

Kieren Dervin is ranked 95th amongst North American skaters. After playing for the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite 15U team where he recorded 73 points in 2022-23. To date, he has also logged 2 points 3 games with the Kingston Frontenacs of the OHL. Kieran is committed to play his college hockey at Penn State University. 

 

Jacob Cloutier is the 193rd ranked North American skater. Jacob also enjoyed a strong season with the 15U Pens Elite team in 2022-23 as he registered 90 points. Last season, Jacob made the jump to junior hockey splitting time between the Chatham Maroons of the GOJHL and the Saginaw Spirit of the OHL. This season, Jacob has excelled with Saginaw, registering 11 goals and 17 assists for a total of 28 points in 40 games. 

 

Charlie Trethewey is the 37th ranked North American skater. After playing for the 13U and 14U  Penguins Elite teams, Charlie is currently playing for the US National Team Development Program. He has scored 18 points in 48 games across various competitions with the team. Charlie is committed to Boston University to play college hockey.

 

L.J. Mooney is ranked 208th amongst North American skaters. The West Mifflin, PA native played in the Penguins Elite program until 2023-24 when he joined the US National Team Development Program where he is now in his second season. This season, he has registered 26 points in 32 games across various competitions with the USNTDP. Mooney is committed to play his college hockey at the University of Minnesota. 

 

Brandon Gorzynski is the 81st ranked North American Skater. After strong seasons with the 15U and 16U Pens Elite squads, he has now moved on to the Calgary Hitmen of the WHL. So far this season, Brandon has scored 25 points in 39 games with the Hitmen.
