Alum MacKenzie King currently plays for Holy Cross in the Hockey East conference. She recently completed her first year with the Crusaders and appeared in all 33 games this past season.
We caught up to chat about her time in the Pens Elite program and how she has adjusted to being a student athlete at Holy Cross.
The adjustment to the speed of the game was hard, I think I had the skills to play in Hockey East, but adjusting to the speed of the game with players in my division was hard, so I couldn’t use my skills until I was able to keep up.
I definitely gained a lot of puck skills and skating skills from Pens Elite!
Push yourself off the ice and push your teammates to continuously raise the pace to make each other better.
Playing in Irvine, California at USA Hockey Nationals in 2019.
My favorite teammate on my team at Holy Cross would be Emma Min, because we’re both so similar in interests, she is always supportive of me and we share the same goals.
In season I would wake up and go to two to three classes, I would usually get a lift in and then skate. We would usually lift 2-3 times a week in season and 4-5 days out of season, then I would be studying after hockey and eating something for dinner.
I love sweet potatoes, salmon and rice, or I like to make myself a salad with chick peas and edamame and feta.
I really liked playing at Lemieux and RMU Island Sports Center, both because the ice felt bigger and the atmosphere was nice, both had nice girls locker rooms too.
