DICK'S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Penguins Elite Announce 2022-23 Head Coaches

The DICK'S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Penguins Elite are proud to announce our coaching staff for the 2022-23 season. We have assembled a coaching staff comprised of the region's premier coaching talent to lead the program, many of whom played the game at the highest levels.


Executive Director, Hockey Development

Brian Mueller

Brian, entering his 7th season with the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite was previously the Vice President of Hockey Operations for 200x85, a program that trained and developed over 15,000 student athletes in the Chicago area. His extensive coaching resume includes two National Championship teams in 2012 and 2016 and two runners-up in 2013 and 2015.

Brian played college hockey at Clarkson University where he was a two time All-American and Hobey Baker Finalist. He was drafted by the Hartford Whalers and played five and a half seasons of professional hockey.

For the 2022-23 season Brian will focus on player development, skill acquisition and oversight of EXCEL Hockey Academy. Brian will work with all Pittsburgh Penguins Elite players. 


Pittsburgh Penguins Elite Coaches 10U - 14U

2013 Edwards

Trevor was born in Toronto, Ontario and went on to play NCAA Hockey at Clarkson University (00-04').  He was honored with Clarkson's Fran Neragin Award in 2004 presented to a player who excels in sportsmanship and academics while contributing significantly to the hockey program.   He was also a Collegiate Hockey Humanitarian award nominee in 2003-2004. After college Trevor spent 3 seasons in the United Hockey League (UHL) before retiring in 2007 after scoring 40 Goals, 49 assists, 89 points in 182 professional games. Trevor coached in the Honeybaked Hockey Club in Detroit, Michigan before joining the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex as a skills development professional. Trevor also oversees the Lil’ 66ers Elite program.


2013 Mueller

Hunter was born in Midland, Michigan and played for the Milwaukee Jr. Admirals, Chicago Mission, and Pittsburgh Penguins Elite. After playing amateur hockey, Hunter is currently a skating and skills coach at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex and Head Coach of the 2012's. 


2012 Edwards

2012 Wynn

Matt is entering his second season coaching with the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite. Matt served as assistant coach with the 2012's during the 2021-22 season and is now ready to take on the Head Coaching role.  Matt also assists with all Penguins Elite goalies in their overall development. 


2011 Hannan

Jeff is a Pittsburgh native who grew up playing for the Pittsburgh Hornets before moving on to play NCAA Division I hockey at Niagara University. During his senior year, Niagara won the Atlantic Hockey regular season championship and advanced to the NCAA tournament. His senior year he was awarded with the Gallagher Sportsmanship Award for his contributions to the hockey program on and off the ice. Jeff is entering his 10th season coaching the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite and was the Head Coach of the 2009’s this past season. Jeff also has experience serving as the Assistant Coach in the North American Hockey League (NAHL) with the Coulee Region Chill, helping develop numerous Division I college hockey players. Jeff also serves as the Skill Development Professional at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex and a scout for the Minnesota Wilderness of the NAHL.


2011 Nelson

Trevor played youth hockey in and around Pittsburgh growing up and will remain with the 2011's for the upcoming season. After playing hockey, Trevor began coaching the Mt. Lebanon High School varsity and freshman teams. He has also spent many years coaching hockey clinics focusing on player skills and has coaches all age groups of youth hockey. 


2010 Hannan

He played junior hockey for three years in the USHL and NAHL before heading to Michigan State University. There he played one year of ACHA hockey and was a first team all American, National tournament MVP, and National Champion. After college, Marco played minor professional hockey all over the United States. After his playing career, Marco began coaching in Detroit with the Little Caesars, Detroit Red Wings Brick, Honeybaked, and Victory Honda organizations. There he coached numerous NHL, Division 1 and Junior hockey players over the last 12 years. He also works as a regional scout for the Tri-City Storm of the USHL.


2008 Trevino

MIDGET MINOR & MIDGET MAJOR COACHES

15U - Danny MacKinnon

Prior to joining the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite as Director of Elite Hockey, Danny was the Hockey Director at Maritime Varsity Academy in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. He also served as the head Coach for the Cole Harbour Major Midgets out of the Nova Scotia Major Midget Hockey League. Danny has experience at all levels as he was a Graduate Assistant Coach at Bemidji State University and has helped develop numerous players into the QMJHL during his time at Maritime Varsity Academy. Furthermore, Danny has spent time working within Hockey Nova Scotia's program of excellence and most recently with Hockey Canada's U17 Development program. Most recently, Danny served as our 15U Head Coach.

Danny finished his playing career at Acadia University and earned an Undergraduate Degree in Kinesiology. After Acadia, he moved to Bemidji, to complete a Master's of Science degree at Bemidji State University. 


16U - Kevin Muller

Kevin has made a name for himself by blending his passion for hockey and technology into a unique training experience.  His use of visual feedback and technical detail have made him a highly sought after skills coach across North America. Kevin has been working in private hockey training facilities and running numerous camps and clinics since 2002. In 2006 he formed online training and coaching website HockeyShare. In 2014 Kevin co-founded hockey training center LM Precision Training in Kenosha, Wisconsin.  He currently works with a number of professional, collegiate, junior, and AAA athletes.  Kevin also brings 16 years of team coaching at the bantam and midget levels as well as 3 years of hockey director experience. Most recently, Kevin served as our 16U Head Coach. 


18U Prep- Dan Mayes

Dan is entering his third season as Head Coach of our 18U Prep team. Prior to joining the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite, Dan spent time at Trine University in Indiana where he has served as the head coach for the ACHA D2 team and as the assistant coach for the NCAA team. In his two seasons as coach of the ACHA team, the Thunder has compiled a record of 54-9-2. They have also qualified for the ACHA D2 national tournament in each of the last 2 seasons.

Dan has served in many coaching roles in his career. Since 2015, he has served as a NCAA volunteer coach at Bowling Green University. He brings a wealth of experience in coaching youth hockey from his previous positions as the head coach of the Little Caesars U14 team and as the associate coach for the Honeybaked Midget 16/18U program and at St. Mary’s Catholic Central High School in Michigan. Dan will also be an asset to DICK'S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Penguins Elite athletes because of his many relationships with college and USHL coaches.


PITTSBURGH PENGUINS ELITE GIRLS COACHES 10U - 19U

10U GASTGEB

Michael grew up in Pittsburgh, where he played for Bethel Park and was captain / leading scorer in his senior year. Michael has experience at the 10U girls level having served as assistant coach this past season with the 10U Suisham team. Michael is currently a police officer in the Robinson Township area. 


10U ATTANUCCI

A native of Pittsburgh, Eric played AAA and junior hockey for the Pittsburgh Jr. Penguins and high school hockey for Mars, winning a State Championship. He went on to play ACHA Collegiate hockey for Robert Morris University, where he earned his Bachelors in Accounting and Masters in Business Administration. Prior to coaching in the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite organization, Eric was an instructor for Playmakers Hockey Corp where he instructed proper shooting technique as well as assisted with on ice skills and power skating lessons at the RMU Island Sports Center.  Eric is also an Elite Level graduate of Benedetti Power Skating, Inc.


12U Suisham

Shaun was raised in Wallaceburg, Ontario and played junior hockey before accepting a scholarship to Bowling Green State University to play football. That began a 16 year football journey that included 11 years in the NFL. Following his retirement in 2016, Shaun has immersed himself back into the game of hockey. As a father of two young hockey players, he is driven to create a positive team experience in the most competitive environment possible.


12U Attanucci

A native of Pittsburgh, Eric played AAA and junior hockey for the Pittsburgh Jr. Penguins and high school hockey for Mars, winning a State Championship. 14U - MOONEY

Kaley is entering her second year as Head Coach for our 14U Girls team. Prior to coaching she played college hockey at Miami University and was a three-time ACHA Division 1 National Champion and a two-time ACHA National Tournament MVP. 

Before coaching in Pittsburgh, Kaley worked at Vanersborgs Hockey Club in Sweden where she coached the U18 and U20 boys’ teams. Prior to that, Kaley was involved in coaching at her alma mater as the Associate Head Coach for the Miami Redhawks Women’s Hockey team.
