Alum Lauren Bernard currently plays for Clarkson University in the ECAC.  She recently completed her first year with the Golden Knights and lead all freshman defenseman on her team in scoring.

We caught up to chat about her time in the Pens Elite program and how she has adjusted to being a student athlete at Clarkson University.

HOW WAS THE ADJUSTMENT FROM YOUTH HOCKEY TO COLLEGE?

The adjustment from PPE to college was a pretty big jump. Players are a lot faster and the game is far more intense. Not only are there faster skaters but your decision making has to be way faster. Even though its a big jump I felt I was as prepared as I could’ve been and made a smooth transition thanks to my years at Pens Elite.

HOW MUCH DID YOUR TIME WITH PENS ELITE HELP GET YOU TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?

The coaches, trainers, teammates and exposure were big factors that helped me become the player I am today. The coaches and trainers showed me what hard work was and continued to develop me from year to year. I also learned a lot of things that I haven’t learned anywhere else, even to this day. My teammates helped push me to get better and it was awesome playing with and against the best female players in the country. Lastly, the amount of exposure I got was incredible.

DO YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS FOR ANY CURRENT PENS ELITE PLAYERS ON HOW TO REACH THEIR GOALS?

Always work hard, never give up, and trust the process. One of my fav quotes is from Babe Ruth and it says “It’s hard to beat a person who never gives up”

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY DURING YOUR TIME AT PENS ELITE?

My favorite memory while playing for Pens Elite was beating Chicago Mission in a shootout in our last round robin game at the 2017 National Championships then beating Shattuck 1-0 the next day in the semi-finals to advance to the national championship game.

WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE TEAMMATE?

Emily Wisnewski is my favorite teammate on my current team because she is just so much fun to be around and is always a great teammate. She always puts the team and others above herself.

WHAT IS A TYPICAL DAY LIKE FOR YOU?

We practice at different times during the week so my day changes (Mon/Wed are the same Tue/Thurs are the same)
A typical Monday for me starts off with class at 8am through the early afternoon. Then we have a time block for hockey from 4-8ish. We lift from 4-5pm then practice 5:30-6:45ish. Then we cool down and go back to our dorms where we eat, do homework then go to bed. I try to go to bed between 10 and 11pm.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PRE-GAME MEAL?

Chicken, Pasta, and Veggies (Broccoli and Asparagus)

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE RINK TO PLAY IN AND WHY?

My favorite rink to play in is our home rink, Cheel Arena, because the size of Cheel is perfect and the atmosphere is so much fun to play in. Our pep band brings so much energy and is so supportive of our team. I also love the horn that sounds every time we score a goal.

WHAT IS YOUR LEAST FAVORITE RINK TO PLAY IN AND WHY?

My least favorite rink to play in is Brown University’s rink because their rink is pretty big and not a lot of fans come to those games so it seems really empty.
