Pittsburgh Penguins Elite Brings Home Four Championships at 2019 Mid-Winter Classic

The 2019 Mid-Winter Classic, presented by Dicks Sporting Goods and hosted by the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite, was held Friday, Dec. 20 through Sunday, Dec. 22 and included 46 top teams in North America in 2007-2010 birth years. Games were held throughout the Pittsburgh area at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, Baierl Ice Complex. RMU Island Sports Center and Alpha Ice Complex.

The tournament served as a fundraiser for the 2007 Penguins Elite’s February trip to the Quebec International Pee Wee Hockey Tournament, one of the most prestigious minor hockey tournaments in the world for Pee Wee-age player.

The 2010 Crosby Division title was taken home by the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite 2010 Edwards. Pens Elite went a perfect 4-0 in the tournament, scoring a remarkable 46 goals and only allowing four. Pens Elite clinched the championship against the New Jersey Rockets with a score of 5-0.

Pittsburgh Penguins Elite won another title in the 2009 Crosby Division with Pens Elite 2009 Edwards taking home the championship. Pens Elite earned points in all six tournament games, going 5-0-1-0. They faced Elgin Middlesex in the championship game, where Pens Elite recorded a four-goal first period, which was enough to put away Elgin. Pens Elite skated away with a 7-3 victory and a second championship for the organization.

A third championship was won by the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite 2008 Conway in the 2008 Crosby Division. Pens Elite Conway went a perfect 6-0 in tournament games, while scoring a division-leading 45 goals throughout. Pens Elite Conway defeated the Cleveland Barons in the championship game to go 7-0 on the weekend. 

A final championship for the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite came in the 2007 Crosby Division with Pens Elite 2007 Hannan taking home the victory. The team went a perfect 6-0 in tournament play and only allowed a remarkable two goals against with their incredible defensive play and goaltending. In the championship game against Mercer Chiefs, Pens Elite shutout their opponent, just as they did in three other tournament games, to capture the title.

The Buffalo Saints captured the 2009 Malkin Division title with a 7-3 defeat of Montgomery.

Carolina Hoover defeated the Carolina Hurricanes in the championship game to claim the 2007 Malkin Division title.
