The Dick's Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Penguins Elite have always stressed the importance of the development aspect throughout their teams. Players from around the region are given the best opportunity to maximize their potential and hopefully further their hockey careers beyond Pens Elite. This past weekend, the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) held its annual draft and five Pens Elite players were selected.

Colby Saganiuk - Erie Otters

Chosen 16th in round two of the draft, the Erie Otters selected 16U forward Colby Saganiuk. The Valencia, PA native is coming off an amazing season filled with some sought after accomplishments. During his most recent season with the 16U team, Saganiuk totaled 63 points this past season. While is consistent playstyle was noticed here in Pittsburgh, it was also noticed by the U.S National 17 and under team. In March, Saganiuk was invited to participate in the National Team Development Program, where he and 51 other players took part in on ice drills and games. He was later selected onto the final U.S. National 17 and under team following the camp. Saganiuk also competed in the USA Hockey National Championship where him and the rest of the 16U team took on Yale, defeating them 2-1 to take home the title. The Otters are coming off an up and down season in which they missed the playoffs, but the team won its second OHL championship in the 2016-17 season.

Teddy Sawyer - Ottawa 67's

Chosen 20th in round three of the draft, the Ottawa 67’s selected 15’s defenseman Teddy Sawyer. The Lewis Center, OH native is coming off a strong season with the Pens Elite 15U team where he registered 14 goals and 33 assists. The Ottawa 67’s are also having a great season up to this point as they were named number one in their division with a 50-12-6 record and are currently undefeated in this year’s playoffs.

Ty Voit - Sarnia Sting

Chosen 6th in round five, the Sarnia Sting selected 15’s forward Ty Voit. The Pittsburgh, PA native has also had a strong showing for the Pens Elite 15U team boasting 32 goals and 32 assists in 62 games played in the 2018-19 season. The Sarnia Sting are coming off an up and down season, making it into the playoffs, however, making a quick exit in the first round.

Carter Schade - Kitchener Rangers

Ryan Walker - Kitchener Rangers

The final two Pens Elite players drafted were selected by the same team, the Kitchener Rangers. The first of the two was Carter Schade, selected 12th in round nine. Schade, a native of Mars, PA, helped take the 16U team into the National Championship where they won the title for the 2018-2019 season. Schade had a strong regular season, boasting 43 points. The final player selected by the Rangers was Pittsburgh native, Ryan Walker. The Pens Elite 15U forward was selected 12th in round fourteen by the Rangers. Walker played a consistent game for the 15U team, scoring 40 points in 59 games.

The Dick's Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Penguins Elite would like to congratulate all five players on their OHL draft picks and will continue to build upon the top players from around the region!
