Pittsburgh Penguins Elite Teams Heading to Nationals

Once again, the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite will be sending off some of their teams to play for national titles. This time around, five different Pens Elite teams have paved their way into the USA Hockey National Championship by winning their respective divisions in the Mid-American District tournaments. With Districts being held just outside of Cleveland, the Penguins’ teams faired strongly in unfamiliar territory sending the boy’s 14U, 15U, and 16U teams as well as the girl’s 14U and 16U teams to Nationals.

The Girls 14U team was the first of the teams to punch their ticket into Nationals by defeating the Lady Barons team 3-0 in the championship game. The team is ranked fourth nationally and finished with a 39-14-4 record. The Girls 16U team followed in the footsteps of the 14U team the day after, defeating the home team, Gilmour Academy, 6-1 in their clinching game. Ranked 20th nationally, the 16U team finished the season with a 16-20-5 record. Both Pens Elite Girls teams will travel to Irvine, California to compete for the National Championships which will be held from April 4th to April 8th.

 The Pens Elite Boys 14U team took Districts head on, sweeping the competition and securing their way to the National Championships. The boys Elite team found themselves matched up again the Pens Elite Black team in the clinching game, defeating the Pens’ Black team 3-1. The 2004 team is ranked eighth overall after finishing with a 34-21-2 record and will defend home ice at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex for the National title. The 15U Boys team also showed a strong performance in Districts powering their way into the championship game where they defeated the Ohio Blue Jackets 2-0. The 15U Elite team finished seventh overall with a record of 42-14-0 and will head to Plymouth, Michigan to play for Nationals. The 16U team also went flawless in their run through Districts and faced off against the Ohio Blue Jackets for the Championship game. The boys went on to defeat the Blue Jackets 4-1 and clinched their ticket to Nationals which will be held in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The 16U team is ranked fourth in the nation after finishing with a record of 42-11-0.  All games in their respective division will take place from April 3rd until April 8th.
